The Polar Bear is ‘conservation dependent’ and efforts are needed to ensure its future
Potential problems include contamination of ice, water, food species and bears themselves by toxic chemicals, pollutants and nuclear waste.

Facts and figures
Polar Bears are found in the Arctic landscapes of Canada, Norway, Greenland, Norway, Russia and Alaska.  Research shows more then a quarter of the Polar Bear populations are in decline.  If current global warming trends continue polar bears may be extinct within 100 years. 5 of the 8 species of polar bears are threatened or endangered.  There are around 22,000 polar bears, of which 15,000 are in Canada.

Climate Change
The reduction in ice means that more solar energy enters the surface waters, which in turn means there is more cooling needed to freeze the sea this winter. The result means the ice will most likely continue to decrease in mean thickness.  What is happening is the rate of warming and melting is increasing so the sea becoming ice free is a very realistic proposition. Ice is melting earlier and freezing later, sun then ice means the refreeze makes for slim pickings and uncertain footing for the Polar Bear.  Bears have less time to hunt, have a longer summer fast and wait longer to resume hunting, causing loss of condition and potential conflict situations when hungry bears come in contact with people.

Chemical Invaders
There is not one living thing on Earth that has not been exposed to man-made industrial or agricultural chemicals.  There is undeniable evidence that a number of man-made chemicals have already caused serious damage to the health of wildlife and humans all over the globe. Only a handful of the many thousands of chemicals in everyday industrial and domestic use have been adequately tested.  Pollutants migrate by air and sea from up to 1,000 miles away.  Bears eat the rich blubber of the seals; tests have proved that concentrated in the fatty tissues of the blubber are high levels of toxins.
